Being Open

Introduction:
Communicating honestly and sympathetically with patients and their families when things go wrong is a vital component in dealing effectively with errors or mistakes in their care. The NPSA’s Being Open policy is part of a national drive to help healthcare staff with this difficult task.
The Being open policy advises healthcare staff to apologise to patients, their families or carers if a mistake or error is made that leads to moderate or severe harm or death, explain clearly what went wrong and what will be done to stop the problem happening again.
Training tools and resources to help staff put policies into practice are now available and include the Being Open e-learning toolkit
The Being open e-learning toolkit provides an overview of the key principles and ‘do’s and don’ts’ of Being open plus some interactive case studies so that staff can practice what they have learnt.
